Listening to the din of Black Flag inspired angry teens in the ‘80s as much as it frightened their parents. Henry Rollins’ roaring voice and the band’s sharp, thundering music defined for many the image and sound of punk for years to come. In time, those images and sounds would sit still and grow into old clichés. What made Black Flag so important wasn’t just the anger of the band, but the intelligence behind it—an intelligence that came with its frontman.
Though the parents that confiscated their children’s music may not have realized it, Rollins was on his way to becoming a cultural and generational force. He’s evolved since his early days in the punk scene to be a poet and spoken word artist, trading the structure of music for straight storytelling and ranting. With insight and wit serving as his new arms, Rollins has redefined himself.
With Rollins Band, formed after the break-up of Black Flag, Rollins began experimenting with everything from metal to jazz, plus adding more of his tirades about politics, music culture and things that generally piss him off. Being Henry Rollins, that last category is pretty big. But what many people never would have expected listening to him in Black Flag is how funny he can be, often poking fun at himself. He does this while joking about how critical he can be when dating. He also often shares stories that are simply fun little windows into the life and times of Henry Rollins, such as going to his first Ramones concert in a sardine-can of a venue, or being asked to say some kind words about James Brown—while Brown stands right next to him.
On the Independent Film Channel, Rollins’ movie-themed talk show has given him the opportunity to rant, talk about film with well-known directors and expose great new bands.
