Koi Care: Everything You Need To Know About Your Pets
The Koi is one of the most popular among the fresh-water pond fish that has emerged in the fish industry nowadays. The Koi can be found thriving in the waters in many outdoor ponds throughout the globe. The are well-loved by their owners due to the many patterns and colors they have, as well as the longevity of their lifespan (up to around 30 years old). Such good qualities make them the perfect pets that can be taken care of in ponds.
This species are domesticated varieties of the carp (the word "Koi" comes from the Japanese word meaning "carp"). They come in a wide variety of colors and patterns, including yellow, orange, black, silver, red, blue and green. Environmental and dietary elements affect the fish's color, and in here you can see the amount of patience and skill it took for the first breeders in Japan to develop such an amazing fish!
They also mingle with the other breeds of fish, as long as they're not small enough to be fed upon by opportunistic predators. They tend to school together in small areas and split up into smaller numbers in large areas.
They can grow rather large, so you're going to need at least 500 gallons of water for them. If ever you get to decide to house them in smaller ponds, just observe how big they can get. If overcrowding occurs, you can always alter the size of your pond by making it bigger, or you can also choose to trade your larger fish for smaller ones.
Keep in mind that space is important for the health of your fish, so for this, you need to keep the number of fish you have in the pond with respect to the amount of water the pond holds. As expensive as they are, they can be hard to replace with.
These fish thrive in cool waters, living in temperatures between 61 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Because these amazing fish live in cooler temperatures, they can be kept outside in the winter safely. Make sure that the pond itself will reach no less than a depth of 3 feet. When winter time comes, they will start their hibernation. Their digestive system will slow down almost stopping. The food kept in their stomach may turn bad and make them sick, that's why it's very important for you not to feed them in weather that fall below the 50 degree mark.
The pond itself is a soothing and relaxing area as you hear its rippling water flows, and to complete it, it should be added with the beautiful Koi. Koi owners consider themselves lucky having this magnificent pet they can take good care of, touching their lives completely!
