Exotic Choices for Bonsai

Are you interested in something more adventurous in the art of bonsai gardening? If so, you need not be stuck with with the more traditional deciduous, coniferous or occasional fruit trees as the only items in your collection. Your choices can range to the more exotic bonsai varieties which will help enhance your skills.

An excellent alternative to the common bonsai is Wisteria, a native of Japan, China, and Korea. In the wild, Wisteria can reach 30 feet or more in size. However, because Wisteria doesn't conform to any of the normal bonsai styles, forming them into a bonsai can be an interesting challenge.

The flowers, assuming a variety of colors - pink, purple, blue, and white - are both beautiful and aromatic. They blossom in the spring when they need a lot of water, so long as there is adequate drainage. Wisteria do well in full sun to partial shade. Provide ample fertilizer in spring just before they flower, then again in late summer while the leaves are still present.

If you love fragrant flowers, an excellent alternative is Orange Jasmine which produces a bright red fruit and fragrant white blossoms, bringing both delight to the nose and beauty to the eye.

Orange Jasmine should be fed every three to four weeks beginning in early spring and continuing through mid-autumn. Light watering is adequate for most of the year, with a little more in the hotter season.

Orange Jasmine is one of the few bonsai that can be and probably should be grown indoors since it does better in moderate shade and filtered sun light.

Mimosa, or silk trees as they are occasionally called because of their long silky filaments, are as fragrant as either of the two choices above. Their lacy foliage and puffy flowers are also just as lovely.

The Mimosa's flowers bloom in late April to early July and moderate water should be given during the blooming season. However, you should avoid getting water on the flowers because, much like a number of other flowering plants, the flowers will quickly deteriorate when wet.

Plan to give your Mimosa plenty of room in your display area as the Mimosa will be one of the larger bonsai in your collection. Because they grow rapidly and have large leaves, they are difficult to sustain in a very small size.

An additional exotic bonsai is the Desert Rose which can turn an ordinary bonsai collection into an exciting full color display. The Desert Rose is a native of East Africa where it grows up to 10 feet tall and produces large, pink, trumpet-bowl flowers.

The Desert Rose should be kept outside most of the year as they need ample sunshine and lots of fresh air. With their very bushy growing habit, they will make a good design complement to the many traditional bonsai in your collection.

They're sensitive to cold, though, so in cold climates they should be brought indoors. They don't thrive below 50F (10C), though they will lie dormant and healthy from 50-60F (10C-15C). During this period they will need very little water.

You should try your hand at some of these exotic beautiful and fragrant flowering plants to expand your horizon and further develop your bonsai gardening skills. They provide a nice contrast when placed among some of the more standard evergreens, such as, pines, firs, and junipers. Additionally, as they lose their leaves in the fall and blossom in the spring, you'll have an interesting ever-changing display.
