Htc Hd Mini Is Simply Minimized

If there's one trend emerging at the recently concluded 2010 Mobile World Congress, it's the penchant of mobile phone makers to shrink beefy models that have proven to be a market success or have generated some eager market expectation. So now you have those Mini versions like the XPERIA X10 Minis. HTC obviously won't be left behind.

It unveiled the HTC HD Mini which, as the name clear indicates, is the minimized version of the hefty HTC HD 2 released in November last year. Housed in an unmistakable HTC crafted body that is beautiful to say the least, the HD Mini runs on the same Windows 6.5 but on its 3rd iteration with the same HTC Sense UI. It somehow got eclipsed by the announced Windows Phone 7 Series demoed in the event and we would have wanted the new HTC to run on it.

Alas, Microsoft still has to announce when its new OS can become available. And since it was made clear by MS that no handset running the Windows Mobile 6.X can't be upgraded to the WinPho7, don't expect the HD Mini to have any upgrade path to it.

Minis undoubtedly will generate some following as they exude the same mystique as their beefy models but presumably at a more affordable price point. With the HD Mini, you won't get the 1 GHz Snapdragon running the HD2 or its 4.3-inch display size but other than these, you're getting an HD2 in humbler circumstance of housing and price.

Full Features in a Mini Shell

For sure, the 600 MHz Qualcomm 7227 processor is not as powerful as the Snapdragon on the HD2, but its 3.2-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen with 6bk colors and Half-VGA resolution won't be as CPU as intensive. You still get the same multitouch support, gravity accelerometer for auto-rotate viewing, ambient light for auto brightness and proximity sensors for disabling the touchscreen sensitivity when held against the face in a call.

Imaging comes with the same 5 megapixel autofocus digicam with geo tagging from its A-GPS, widescreen photo capture and unspecified video recording capability. Entertainment gets a boost with DivX video support for its otherwise capable media players. You get the same stereo FM with RDS and stereo listening options for a wired headphone using its 3.5mm audio jack or wireless using its Bluetooth A2DP support

The HD Mini is your 3G phone on the dual band UMTS with 7.2 Mbps on HSDPA and 2 Mbps on HSUPA and a quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE on 2G. You also get WiFi 802.11b/g with WiFi router support. There's the usual local data connectivity features like Bluetooth 2.1 and microUSB 2.0. There's A-GPS with digital compass and location finder using HTC Footprint.

You get the same 512 MB ROM and a slightly reduced 384 MB RAM from the HD2's 448 MB RAM. MicroSD memory expandability for up to 32 GB is likewise supported. Its 1200 mAh Li-Ion batter allows up to 435 mins of talk time and 340 hours on standby and audio playback time of up to 12 hours on a single charge.

Availability

The Taiwan based mobile phone innovator HTC plans to get the HTC HD Mini out to Asian and European markets where its UMTS dual band 900/1200 HSPA works. No other body colors except the mundane black will be offered. This early, no price or carrier deals are forthcoming but if the current HD2 price was any indication, expect the Mini to come under.
