The Highlights of the Life and Works of Diego Velasquez

One Spanish painter that made a clear distinction of them all is Diego Velasquez; he became one of Spain’s highly influential and most adored master of his era. Coming from minor nobility, Diego Velasquez was born in Seville in June 5, 1599 and he was the first child of six children. Velasquez’s skill was so apparent that at the young age of eleven, he began his apprenticeship with another master of the arts at that time whose name was Francisco Pacheco. He then chose as his wife the daughter of Pacheco and Velasquez made paintings of religious themes and tavern pieces, which is immensely revered by a lot of people, and with all the earnings he saved, he purchased a good house for them and another house to be rented out.

Diego Velasquez produced plenty of exceptional paintings that made him popular and an example of the country’s most influential personalities. One well-known work that he created when he met Marquez de Spinola is the Surrender of Breda; the painting tells the victory of Spinola and when it was shown to Spinola he was captivated and greatly respected the brilliance of how Velasquez captured such emotions and expressed them through realism in his portraits. Another masterpiece that Velasquez made was the Las Meninas or The Maids in Honour; it is known to be a great masterpiece of all time and considered as most visited painting around the world.

There are still plenty to be said about Diego Velasquez, his life, the role he played as one of Spain’s most prominent individual during his time and his exceptional paintings that transcends through time.
