1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die is an eclectic combination of a wide variety of different kinds of music. Author Tom Moon loves blues, classical, country, folk, hip-hop, jazz, musicals, opera, pop, rock, sound tracks, and other music from all over the world, and wants to encourage others to develop a similarly broad taste.
Moon has essentially provided a list of his favorite recordings (from the middle of the twentieth century onward), but since he is not only a music lover, but a critic and performer, his choices have a certain authority. Surely no one else will agree with all of his choices, but his informed opinions will be sure to help any reader learning about a new genre.
He wrote 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die not for people who want to fill out their collection of any one kind of music (although it can be used for that), but for people who want to explore new things. Therefore, Moon arranged all of his entries in alphabetical order by artist (or composer). That choice leads to some very interesting juxtapositions. Right after the entry for rhythm and blues singer Baby Huey comes six for J.S. Bach (classical), followed in turn by Bad Brains (punk rock).
Well-known artists mingle with obscure figures Moon thinks deserve more attention.
The listings include both both entire albums (with "key tracks" specified) and individual numbers, often with recommendations of related pieces. Moon's descriptions display his passionate love of music, broad knowledge, and strong opinions. They include numerous quotations and interesting anecdotes. Because of the alphabetical organization of the entries, 1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die requires good indexing. Moon provides four indexes and playlists of music to suit various moods and occasions, such as "Road Trip Soundtrack" (both AM and PM) or "Music to Inspire Reflection."
1,000 Recordings to Hear Before You Die invites readers on a musical adventure to hunt for new treasures and discover new pleasures.
