The Neglected History of the Guitar

Has it ever come to mind as to how your wonderful guitar was made? To be honest, the guitar didn't start out looking as it is today. It has had quite a history that dates back to the forgotten civilizations of the Mesopotamian era. The pioneering model of the guitar was from Iraq, only to pop up again two millennia later. In ancient times it was still called Mesopotamia. In caves near the area, archaeologists found drawings of humans with instruments that resemble a guitar. After the expansion of Rome and a couple thousand years later, another stringed instrument that was built similarly like the modern day guitar was rediscovered in a tomb. The dark ages also show that their version of the guitar was pretty popular too. The two designs that were most widely used were of either French or of German influence. One of the designs were rounder, with a stout neck for the frets and a sound hole. The other was geometric, and straight-edged. These were found in some English church ruins and tombs. It is assumed that these were the influence brought upon by the Moors in the early 8th century when they came to Europe. In terms of the maturation of the guitar, Spain was the main center as it was located where the Moors initially started their invasion. The Vihuela was the first guitar model to become popular, at that time it had twelve frets. People then started writing tabs for these instruments so it could be easily played by anyone. During the resistance, everyone chose to play the guitar. Upon contemplation, these past actions played a big role in the formation of the guitar's image today. Louis XIV was the main cause of the increase of the guitar's popularity during the 17th and 18th century. Mastering the art of guitar playing was a novelty among the elite in Europe. After that, the evolution of the guitar continued until it came to look like how it looks like today. The guitar became so popular that it was finally brought to America, it's popularity had spread worldwide after that. Nowadays, the guitar is at the zenith of its popularity. The guitar as an instrument of self-expression was the newest craze. People erected halls and venues where talented guitarists could play for other people, people started dancing to the music of guitars, it was soon popularized on the radio as well. As the clamor for more guitar music increased, so did the musicians' thirst for bigger, better and bolder guitars became. In turn, guitar manufacturers develop what we call the electric guitars we so love today. Be it country, folk or rock, guitars are the number one choice for anyone starting a career in music.
